Old Ephraim's Grave-
Location where an 11-foot tall grizzly was killed in 1923, said to be the largest
and last of the grizzlies in this region. His skull is in the Special Collections at
Utah State University. 5.4 mile hike one-way. Take US 89 up Logan
Canyon to the Right Hand Fork Road, 9.4 miles from Logan. Go 1 mile to
the first junction. Go left for .6 miles to end of the road and park
your car for the trailhead. The trail is not marked (as of July 2003), so after going
about .7 miles, you'll come to your first fork. Follow the signs for
motorcycle use (at the 1st fork go right and through a gate; at the 2nd
fork go left). The trail for bikes, horses and people goes
elsewhere. After about 2.8 miles after the 2nd fork, you should
eventually end up on the Forest Road #056. Take a left on the road for
about 1.5 miles. There is an 11-foot tall stone on the right side of the
road which represents the bear's height. While you can drive the road to
the location, talk with the Forest Service at the entrance to Logan
Canyon to see if the road is passable and where to find it. When we
talked to them, they recommended only serious off-road vehicles or ATV's
to attempt it as there are spots where a vehicle can almost
disappear.
